Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham

(1852-1936)

Known as ‘Don Roberto’, Graham was a Scottish politician, writer, journalist, adventurer, and social reformer. Born in London to Scottish and Spanish aristocratic parents and educated at Harrow and in Brussels. He lived as a gaucho in Argentina before returning to Scotland,where  co-founded the Scottish Labour Party with Keir Hardie.

Sir Ernest Shackleton

(1874–1922)

Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer and one of the central figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Served under Scott on the Discovery Expedition. In 1907, Shackleton led the Nimrod Expedition, reaching within 97 miles of the South Pole—then the closest anyone had come—and was knighted upon his return.​ Shackleton’s most famous journey was the Endurance Expedition (1914–1917), an attempt to cross Antarctica from coast to coast.
