The story of Bert Trautmann is one that could have been taken straight from a “Boy’s Own” comic. A decorated German paratrooper, Trautmann was captured on the Western Front as the Second World War drew to a close. He refused to be repatriated on his release in 1948 and settled in Lancashire where he combined farm work with playing in goal for St Helens Town where his performances soon gained him a reputation as a ‘keeper of outstanding ability. He was signed by Manchester City in 1949. His signing was initially met with protest but his ability quickly won over City fans. Named Footballer of the Year in 1956 Trautmann entered footballing folklore when during the 1956 FA Cup he dived at the feet of a Birmingham City player he suffered a serious injury despite which he continued to play to the final whistle making several crucial saves to preserve Manchester City’s lead. 3 days later an X-ray showed he had played with a broken neck.
