This 3/4 life size portrait bust portrays Basil Rathbone in his role as legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes. The statue which measures around 16 inches on it’s mahogany base is cast in resin bronze and finished with a light verigris over “penny black” patination. Attached to the base is an inscribed brass plaque with the legend “Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes” although these can be custom made with any choice of wording. For many, the archetypal Sherlock Holmes is portrayed by Basil Rathbone due, in part, to a striking resemblance to Sherlock as drawn by the Victorian artist Sidney Paget who illustrated the early versions of Conan Doyle’s work. In 1938 Basil Rathbone was cast as Sherlock Holmes for the 20th Century Fox adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles and went on to play the character in a further thirteen films.
